There was a lot of back-and-forth on this project because of the subject of the book and because of the way we were trying to capture this really big idea (priest struggling with celibacy) with a murder mystery and trying to make the book not look too religious-oriented. I created a total of nine different concepts. I spent a lot of time researching and we (the author and I) spent a lot of time scratching our heads, wondering how to make this work.
I think it was the author who had the idea to use a stained glass window to represent the “church” and it was my idea to replace the ‘i’ in “The Calling” with a bloody butcher knife to represent the murder aspect.
It was really exciting to flex my photomanipulation skills again. This consists of about 3 or 4 different images, stitched together as carefully as possible to look as seamless as I could. Though this cover took longer than most because of the constant back-and-forth, I’m really happy with the final result and the author seems to be really pleased about it as well.
